FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

SATURN TRANSITS - Other than the house and sign placement of Saturn, where else in your chart is important to take notice of during Saturn transits? +

Is transiting Saturn making aspects to any planets in your chart? If so, these planets will also asked to “grow up and get serious.”

If you look at that question and think, "What on earth is she talking about?" then keep reading!

What is an aspect?

An aspect is two planets or points that have aligned at special degrees.

Basically an aspect occurs when two (or more) planets form a special distance from each other (degree). When this happens, it's like the planets are talking to each other. They are locked into a conversation together. Sometimes the conversation is easy and flowing, sometimes the conversation is challenging and the two planets are pushing each other to learn and grow.

(The Saturn Return is an aspect, and more specifically a transit. It happens when Saturn in the sky gets locked into a conversation with Saturn in your birth chart. The aspect at your Saturn return is 0 degrees--a conjunction. More about this later.)

Are aspects always transits?

You have planets in aspect with each other in your birth chart. These are just called aspects. When an aspect occurs between a planet moving in the sky (transiting) and a planet in your birth chart, this is aspect as well and is usually called a transit.

Aspects also occur when using other advanced predictive techniques such as secondary progressions and solar arcs.

This is a lot. How can I just easily find out what transits are happening in my chart?

I really like the app Time Passages. Download it, put your birth info in, and then check the "transits tab."

I'm a math person and I want to get good at astrology, tell me more about transits!

Let's dive in! In the following list I'm including the aspects and the degrees at which they occur. I'm also including their meanings (from my perspective).
Basically what we are going to do is pick apart how two planets might talk to each other, based on the aspect they are creating. What kind of conversation are they having? How is that energy affecting your life?

Real quick though, before you can figure out the type of conversation the two planets might have together, you have to look at the meaning of the planets. Who are these planets who are talking to each other?

Sun - core sense of self, expressing your true spirit to other people

Moon - your emotions and your quick reactions when your emotions come up

Mercury - thinking, your mind, your mindset, communication, language, writing

Venus - relationships, receiving, pleasure, money / abundance, the feminine energy

Mars - action, drive, assertiveness, aggression

Jupiter - expansion, Jupiter acts as expanding agent to whatever it touches, growth

Saturn - contraction, Saturn acts a contracting agent, helping to pare things down so that they have a stronger form and function

Neptune - dissolving boundaries, Neptune acts as a mystifier, making thing more mystical or more foggy

Pluto - transformer, Pluto acts as transformational agent asking you to look at where you are holding on to control and release so that new beginnings can take place

Okay, now for the aspects!

Now that you know who has entered the room (the planets) you can look at they types of conversations they are having. As you start to interpret, think about the symbolism of the signs involved as well. Eventually you will synthesize all three of these symbols together--the planets, the signs and the aspect in your interpretations.

Trine - 120 degrees

An easy way to check degrees is to look for the following grouping of signs.

Fire signs Aries, Leo, Sagittarius are generally trine to each other.
Earth signs Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn are generally trine to each other.
Air signs Gemini, Libra, Aquarius are generally trine to each other.
Water signs Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces are generally trine to each other.

*Heads up, this is not at all an exact or refined way to find a trine. Because, for example, if you have your Sun at 3 degrees Aries, and transiting Saturn is at 28 degrees Leo, they are actually 145 degrees apart and not 120 degrees apart. In this example, both planets would be 120 degrees apart if the Sun was at 3 degrees Aries and transiting Saturn was at 3 degrees Leo.

A trine is a supportive, gentle, graceful aspect. Easy and tranquil.
For example: if transiting Saturn is in Aquarius and your Sun is in Libra, Saturn will be making a gentle trine to your Sun. That means that Saturn will be asking your Sun (core sense of self) to mature and get organized. This will be gentle and harmonious and probably build up your confidence and self-esteem, because it’s an easy aspect. Because the signs involved are air signs, it may have to do with communication, friendship or partnership.

Sextile - 60 degrees

These are generally signs that are 2 signs away from each other. Again, this is not an exact way to find the aspects, but it's a good guideline to help you get started.

Aries is sextile Aquarius and Gemini
Taurus is sextile Pisces and Cancer
Gemini is sextile Aries and Leo
Cancer is sextile Taurus and Virgo
Leo is sextile Gemini and Libra
Virgo is sextile Cancer and Scorpio
Libra is sextile Leo and Sagittarius
Scorpio is sextile Cancer and Capricorn
Sagittarius is sextile Libra and Aquarius
Capricorn is sextile Scorpio and Pisces
Aquarius is sextile Sagittarius and Aries
Pisces is sextile Capricorn and Taurus

A sextile is a flowing, harmonizing, supportive aspect.
For example: if transiting Saturn is in Aquarius and your Sun is Sagittarius, Saturn will be making a supportive sextile to your Sun. That means that Saturn will be propping up your Sun (core sense of self) and possibly assisting a desire to become more systematized, structured, clear, focused and productive. This is a supportive, harmonizing, flowing aspect. If you find this aspect in your chart, think of the planets involved as resources that you can draw upon during your Saturn transit.

Conjunction - 0 degrees

A conjunction happens when two planets are in the same sign. Sometimes a conjunction can occur when planets are in different signs, but one is very close to the beginning and the other is very close to the end of two adjacent signs.

What planets in your chart are in the same sign as transiting Saturn? If it is your Saturn return, your natal Saturn will be in the same sign as transiting Saturn. Saturn has “returned” to the sign it was in at your birth, and is now conjunct your natal Saturn.

These planets will bring their energies together and blend. One creative way to think about it is to imagine the two signs in a conversation together. What will they say to each other? How do they get along? Are they fighting or having a nice time together? If they end up in a fight, who wins? Maybe it changes so sometimes one of your planets wins and sometimes the transiting planet wins.

For example if transiting Saturn is in Capricorn and your natal Mercury is in Capricorn, you might start thinking very seriously during the time of the transit. This will be most strong when Saturn is within 2 degrees of your Mercury. Maybe you will even be more critical of yourself (Saturn = inner critic, Mercury = thinking). Or maybe you will come up with some ideas to plan better for your future. (Saturn = plans, Mercury = thinking). Maybe you’ll set better boundaries and communicate what you need to others. (Saturn = boundaries, Mercury = communication).

Be creative as you think about the planets in your chart that are making a conjunction to Saturn.

Here are the meanings of the planets to get you started. You can also do a quick internet search with the name of the planet + astrology to deepen your learning.

Square - 90 degrees

(Look for signs that are in the same modality, but not opposite each other.)

Aries is square Cancer and Capricorn

Taurus is square Leo and Aquarius

Gemini is square Virgo and Pisces

Cancer is square Aries and Libra

Leo is square Scorpio and Taurus

Virgo is square Sagittarius and Gemini

Libra is square Cancer and Capricorn

Scorpio is square Aquarius and Leo

Sagittarius is square Pisces and Virgo

Capricorn is square Aries and Libra

Aquarius is square Taurus and Scorpio

Pisces is square Gemini and Sagittarius

A square is a challenging aspect that can propel you to problem solve. Sometimes the energies clash and sometimes the friction gets you to work a little harder to find a solution.

For example: if transiting Saturn is in Capricorn and your Sun is in Aries challenges can arise that affect your core sense of self. You may be asked to find new solutions. Saturn asks you to draw back your troops so that you can regroup and move forward with a better plan. When it is a square aspect you might keep working to try to solve the problem and eventually you’ll find the information you need. This is a driven and challenging aspect that can yield results. Stick with it! But don’t burn out.

Opposition - 180 degrees

Planets that are on opposite sides of the wheel.

Aries - Libra

Taurus - Scorpio

Gemini - Sagittarius

Cancer - Capricorn

Leo - Aquarius

Virgo - Pisces

An opposition is a face-off. If transiting Saturn is opposing a planet in your chart, there is a build- up of pressure that asks you to make a choice.

Saturn and the Sun - Who do you want to become? What do you have to let go of to be true to yourself?

Saturn and the Moon - If it’s just you and your feelings, are you okay with that? If you have to just sit still and feel the feelings without compulsively reaching for something to soothe you, do you trust that you’ll survive? Be with yourself.

Saturn and Mercury - It’s time to face how you’ve been talking to yourself. Are you acting in integrity? Bring it back to basics. What is really important in your life? Do you believe that it’s possible?

Saturn and Venus - Do you know what balance is? Are you experiencing harmony in your relationships? Weaknesses in your relationships are meant to be exposed so that they can be strongmen and you can either be more considerate of either yourself or other people. Do you believe in abundance? At this time you may find that finances need to be looked at. What is your energy worth and do you always have to work or are you allowed to receive without effort?

Saturn and Mars - Are you putting your energy into the places where it’s most effective? Are you straining or does your lifestyle energize you? You will need to take a hard look at how you are going after things— too aggressive, too passive or just right (assertive)?

Saturn and Jupiter - You may need to get bigger so that you can get smaller. You take up more space so that you can pare things down in a more appropriate way for who you are now (examples: gain confidence so that you can ask for a divorce, or get the energy to clean out your attic, or expand your knowledge about nutrition so that you can lose weight.)

OR

You might need to get smaller so that you can get bigger. Contract now so that you can expand later. (examples: cut your budget so that you can afford a big trip you’ve been wanting to take, improve your time management so that you can enjoy more down time in your day, remove an income stream which frees you up to make more money doing something that’s in better alignment.)

Saturn and Saturn - that’s your Saturn opposition! This is usually a time to make a big decision about whether the direction your life is headed in truly makes sense for you.

Saturn and Neptune - It’s time to apply yourself when it comes to your spirituality, sense of connection to your higher self, a great time to strengthen your intuition. This might seem challenging to do, and your sense of faith or hope may be challenged, but it is an opportunity to buckle down. Reality can also feel challenged, you might need to decide who you are going to listen to and what the truth of a situation is. Because the fog is in the air, make decisions slowly and take lots of time to think things through.

Saturn and Pluto - Transform, break down, release so that you can build it up stronger later. Notice where you need to be in control or have power. Maybe this is an opportunity to let go, surrender, and heal.

Some notes:

I've included the major aspects here. There are also minor aspects to learn.

I use a 2 degree orb when calculating transits.

I use a 10 degree orb when calculating aspects in the natal chart.

I use a 1 degree orb for secondary progressions and solar arcs.

SATURN RETURN - I am coming up to the end of my Saturn return (I believe) and am not quite where I was hoping to be. What do I do? +

You can look at the planets in your chart and notice if transiting Saturn is making a major aspect to them. If so, these planets will also asked to “grow up and get serious.”

These are the aspects

Easy aspects-

That means that Saturn will be propping up your Sun (core sense of self) and possibly assisting a desire to become more systematized, structured, clear, focused and productive. This is a supportive, harmonizing, flowing aspect. If you find this aspect in your chart, think of the planets involved as resources that you can draw upon during your Saturn transit.

Challenging aspects

Conjunction [note: a conjunction is sometimes challenging and sometimes easy, when it comes to Saturn though I put it in the challenging category.]

0 degrees

Square

90 degrees

A square happens when two planets are 90 degrees apart. Signs that are square are in the same modality, but not in the same polarity.

(Positive Polarity - Fire and Air signs, Negative polarity, Earth and Water signs)

(Modalities are:

Cardinal - Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn

Fixed - Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius

Mutable - Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces)

Aries is square Cancer and Capricorn

Taurus is square Leo and Aquarius

Gemini is square Virgo and Pisces

Cancer is square Aries and Libra

Leo is square Scorpio and Taurus

Virgo is square Sagittarius and Gemini

Libra is square Cancer and Capricorn

Scorpio is square Aquarius and Leo

Sagittarius is square Pisces and Virgo

Capricorn is square Aries and Libra

Aquarius is square Taurus and Scorpio

Pisces is square Gemini and Sagittarius

A square is a challenging aspect that can propel you to problem solve. Sometimes the energies clash and sometimes the friction gets you to work a little harder to find a solution.

Stick with it! But don’t burn out.

Opposition

180 degrees, planets that are on opposite sides of the wheel. This is going to be planets in signs that are in the same modality and in the same polarity.

SATURN RETURN - Saturn is currently affecting my area of relationships. But when we go through the different coloured doors in the coaching module, the doors cover other topics than just relationships. Of course all aspects are interlinked when it comes to our growth but is it important to keep Saturn's focus in mind? +

It's okay to keep Saturn's "focus" (which is usually the theme of the house or sign that Saturn occupies) in mind, but let the meditation take you where it will. Sometimes there will be a clear connection in mind, and sometimes there won't.

In general, at your Saturn Return, you are changing and growing in all areas of your life, the "focus" can give important clues to what the catalyst is that's making that growth happen, but it's not the full story. Here's a wonky metaphor. Pretend that you want to renovate your bathroom, so your "focus" is your bathroom. But in order to do that, you need to make sure the foundation of your house can support the amazing jacuzzi you are about to have installed. When you check the foundation, you realize you have a termite problem that is affecting your whole house. Even though the focus is still your bathroom renovation, there is a lot of other adjustment happening.

SATURN RETURN - How do you check in and get a gauge of how much you've learnt and grown before Saturn returns? +

What a great question! Dana and I like to say that none of this healing and growth happens in a straight line, and it's never really "done". The process is more like a spiral, at each return it's possible to dive into the theme in a new way and at a new development of growth.

That being said, astrology is beautiful because it is like your syllabus for your class here on Earth--it can give you good guidelines to follow.

Start with the sign that your natal Saturn is in. What are the themes of that sign? What do you hope to have, do, be or develop in regards to that theme? How can you get support with that? Make a list of who or what might help you right now. (Module 2 and 3 in the Saturn Return workshop offer lots of support.)

If this is your 2nd Saturn Return, reflect on what you learned about that theme at your first Saturn return. You might be taking that education to a new level this time. How could you delve in more deeply?

And look at the house Saturn is in currently. (If you are actually in your Saturn return, it will be in the same house it was in when you were born.)

This is where you are currently learning lessons. What is coming up around the theme of the house that Saturn is currently in? For example, if you are coming up on your Saturn return and it will happen in your 10th house (career), but Saturn is currently in your 9th house (higher education), maybe you need to be focusing on your higher education or higher philosophies / values now, before you can take all of that knowledge out into the public when your Saturn return happens in your 10th house of public recognition and career later on.

THE MOON CYCLE - How does the lunar cycle play a part during the Saturn transit? You own lunar cycle and the monthly one? +

In astrology there are always multiple cycles happening simultaneously.

The Lunar cycle is the fastest as it happens every month. I tend to use it to get a sense of the mood that I'll be in on any given day. The moon changes signs every 1.5 - 2.5 days, so keeping track can help you feel into the energy of the different signs. You can feel what Pisces feels like for you versus Capricorn energy.

As far as how it relates to the Saturn transit, it might be as simple as heightening your moods. For example if you find yourself to be more emotional when the Moon is in a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), and at the same time your whole life is under review because of your Saturn return, those emotions may be more heightened. You can use your awareness of the moon cycle to help you understand your emotional reactions.

PREDICTION - I have a good understanding of my birth chart but am still trying to find a way to keep up with what is going on in my chart currently. Any recommendation on how to keep up with how the planets/houses/signs are impacting me as they are always moving? +

You are at the stage of learning where you are wanting to dip a toe into "predictive astrology". Predictive astrology is the practice of looking at the current astrology to predict or understand the energies that are affecting you now and in the future. Before we go further here, a word of advice. It's most beneficial to look at the energies that are affecting you now, or maybe a better way to say this is the energies that you are working with now. When you look at the energy of the cycles coming up ahead, remember that prediction is very difficult, especially when you are predicting for yourself. When I am working with clients I look at the upcoming cycles and bring in a healthy dose of intuitive practice to help understand and communicate what is coming up. It's difficult to do that for yourself if you are coming from a place of worry or apprehension. So check out your upcoming cycles regularly instead of only at moments of uncertainty.

Here are some ideas:

A Good Book - "Predictive Astrology: The Eagle and the Lark" by Bernadette Brady.

The Moon Cycle - Keep track of the Full and New Moons and where the lunations are happening in your chart. I wrote a Moon Journal that was published with Chronicle Books that could be a helpful resource. Also the best way to get familiar with the energy of the signs is to keep track of the Moon signs (check my IG highlights for help there -- @sandysitron)

The Mars cycle - look at where transiting Mars lands your chart - the closer it is to your natal Mars, the more you have a push, or more energy. When transiting Mars is close to opposition with your natal Mars, you may find yourself having lower energy.

The Jupiter cycle - look at where Jupiter is in your chart to see where you have assistance, where you are growing and expanding.

The Saturn cycle is what you are learning about in this course and it is my favorite cycle to look at to understand the "astrological weather". So you already have a head start!

Eclipses - where do the most recent and the upcoming eclipses land in your chart? If they are near any of your natal planets look at the energy of the natal planets and imagine what it would be like to have a new beginning with that energy / theme / identitiy. What is being released?

Remember - free will is always a thing, so none of these influences are the whole story. You always have a choice (refer to the free will answer below).

-Sandy

PREDICTION - I am wondering more about how the eclipse and all the planets in retrograde are impacting things now? Do these things impact me differently than others based on my chart? +

Some eclipses will impact you more than others. Some retrogrades will impact you more than others. To understand how eclipses and retrogrades are affecting you, find out the degrees of the event and then look at your chart to discover where those degrees are in your chart.

For example, if there is a solar eclipse at 10 degrees Capricorn, then find 10 degrees Capricorn in your chart. What house does that degree fall in? Are there natal planets or points near 10 degrees Capricorn (within 8 degrees) Are there planets or points making a square (90 degrees) or opposition (180 degrees) to 10 degrees Capricorn? In this example that would be 10 degrees of the cardinal signs. 10 degrees Aries and Libra would be square the eclipse point. 10 degrees Cancer is opposing the eclipse point. Write down any planets or point that are near these sensitive degrees. And also write down the house that the eclipse takes place in. An eclipse is opportunity to start fresh. It is also an ending It can also act as a cleansing agent or an exposing agent that clears any rot or exposes any rot. Think about how you might be processing this new ending or beginning. Synthesize the symbolism of the planets involved with the idea of a clearing / new beginning / ending. Be as creative as possible. But remember, worry or apprehension has no place here. Use your intuition. Ask yourself what your higher self would say.

For interpreting a retrograde, look at the house that the retrograde takes place in, and look at the planets involved. This is a chance for a review process, a chance to go back and notice anything that was skipped over, or a chance for an internal process that allows you to reflect and gain insight.

-Sandy

STELLIUM - When I look at my chart, there's a whole slew of planets near Saturn (if I'm reading correctly, I think they are Mars, Uranus, Mercury, Neptune, all preceding Saturn). I'm wondering what the specific challenges of Saturn transiting with each of these planets are (I can sort of get an idea from the astrology primer descriptions, but any additional insight would be helpful!) as well as when Saturn was transiting them (i.e. was this all in the last year, year and a half? Hindsight is 20/20...). +

Starting with the astrological primer descriptions is the right way to go! Especially since you already lived this experience, when you know the general descriptions of the planets, you can come to so many more nuanced and interesting interpretations of what happened in your own life than I would be able to as an outsider (without turning on my intuition and reading for your specific chart). Let's run through these planets that you listed so that you get the idea of how to continue the interpretation process.

So it sounds like shortly before your Saturn Return, you had Saturn conjunct Mars, Uranus, Mercury AND Neptune. That means that in your natal chart you have a cluster of planets grouped together, possibly in the same sign and house. A cluster of planets like that is called a stellium. When you have a lot of other planets near your Saturn return, it might feel like your Saturn return actually begins when transiting Saturn gets close to the first planet in the stellium. I like to say that you have a Super Saturn return, the extended version. So you can break it all down by looking at the conjunction of Saturn and each individual planet, but know also that there may be some blending of the themes, since all of the planets are so close together, they are all talking to each other.

Saturn conjunct Mars - take a hard look at how you are using your energy. This may be a time where the pressure you've been living under catches up with you and you burn out. OR you might find that this conjunction inspires you to get very regulated with your energy. Your time management improves. You either keep beating your head against the wall or you get smart about it. Another thing that might come up is a review process around how you want to go after things in life. Maybe a change in direction?

Saturn conjunct Uranus - This can bring up a strong desire for change. Often you aren't sure what needs to change but there is a restlessness. Sometimes people can get a lot of heat, rashes, or a feeling of "electricity" in the body. I like to call this the "eject button" transit. A feeling of looking around and anything you see in your life you want to break free of or get out of. Usually the best thing to do is find self-care techniques that help you relax.

Saturn and Mercury - this conjunction can either of have the effect of making you feel like a negative Nancy OR it can inspire you to become more matter of fact and improve your mental practices. This transit is great for the mindset work in module 2. Change your mind, change your life. Just remember that this conjunction can inspire the inner critic, try not to be too hard on yourself.

Saturn conjunct Neptune - An opportunity to get structured around your intuitive practices OR an intense feeling of fog that makes it hard to see the road ahead. If you develop your intuition at this time, you have a reservoir of self-trust and inner knowing that can guide you and give you confidence even when the outside world is foggy or you are waiting for more information to come through.

GETTING TRIGGERED - Any tips on getting into a calm, grounded state of mind mid-conversation? +

Great question! In the course, there's a bonus training we did called "Healing Your Emotional Triggers", which addresses this exact situation. Go watch it here (the cliff's notes I'd leave here wouldn't be nearly as supportive). 🙂

PATTERNS - my life has always been STRESS and ACTION and NOW. I was dealing with tremendous burnout and have taken several months off to rest, regroup and recenter. I'm going back to work soon - a very short term job - but I'm already feeling anxious about being slow and going back to my old pattern of ignoring my feelings and my problems. I start each day with the grounding meditation and know that I can refer back to it as the day goes on. What other suggestions or tips do you have for not letting myself get swept back up in the chaos and crazy? +

You know we love exploring a pattern! Yes, a grounding practice can be wildly supportive for you to cultivate resilience in your nervous system...AND...there's more to it. This isn't as much a tip as it is YOUR WORK. You have the opportunity to dig into this pattern and understand why you keep pushing yourself to tremendous burnout. I absolutely understand that there are circumstances where there are bills to pay and things that must be done. However, tremendous burnout is not sustainable. So this isn't a longhaul strategy, as I'm sure you know. There's work for you to do to discover what's at the root of this pattern. When you get there you'll be able to shift it. Until then, you'll just be bandaiding. Luckily, Module 2 has guidance for you. And I KNOW you're full of personal insight from Module 1 with Sandy. Also, there's some room for you to take responsibility for letting yourself get swept up (the language there is a little irresponsible, as if there's a sweeping and you may or may not have agency to not be swept). What would it look like to stand in your power here? To listen to yourself? Your body? Your inner guidance?

PATTERNS - When I did the Patterns / Beliefs exercise I realized that almost all of my patterns are worth related so I would love to get some tools around that: money + relationships + prioritizing my goals + needs (notice how I even put my self last in this list) +

Oh you bet I noticed! If you want to dig in on worth in any area of your life and YOU are at the bottom of your own list...there's a reprioritization that needs to happen internally before you can make changes externally (and have those external changes stick).

What keeps you from putting yourself at the top of your own list?

Lean into that question first. The tools will only work for the long haul if you get curious to understand this root piece of the pattern.

The whole of Module 2 will totally support you digging into this. Lesson 4, The Process, will give you very direct guidance for identifying and shifting this pattern. Module 3 will help you practice the hell out of it. 🙂

RELATIONSHIPS - I'm growing and changing but my loved ones aren't. What do I do? +

When we're on different pages than our loved ones I suggest a 2 part approach: acceptance and modeling. Acceptance is not about accepting bad behavior, it's about accepting where someone is coming from (usually a place of un-metabolized woundedness), and acknowledging where they're at on their journey. Once you can have some acceptance and release trying to fix them or do their work for them, you can have some more room to just be authentic. Yes, even if that authenticity is painful. The point is not to avoid pain, but to be with your loved ones and love them without having to fix them. Then we have modeling, which is to show up for them how you'd like them to show up for you. Practice these both for awhile. You'll notice when your acceptance comes with a cost or an expectation. You'll notice when your modeling becomes performative. You might in there open up with some authentic conversations (Fierce Conversations by Susan Scott is a FAVE) about where you're at and how you'd like to be supported. You can ask them how they'd like to be supported too. You may want different things. They may struggle with your growth for various reasons. See if you can use this model to understand your loved one. If after you've practiced for awhile and feel like you've shown up thoroughly and there's still a lot of friction, you might consider what a new version of this relationship could look like. Boundaries might be your next step.

FREE WILL - With astrology, how much free will do we actually have? It seems like certain transits are just destined to have us either down in the dumps or energized. How can we use our astrology knowledge to help us flow more smoothly through particularly challenging transits (like the Saturn Return!)? Sometimes I feel as though I am a puppet to these universal energies. +

I know what you mean!

My favorite way to think about this is to think about the weather. Can I control if the skies are gray for days on end? Nope. Will that affect my mood? Maybe. If the skies are gray, I can respond or react depending on a lot of other factors. My sense of self determination might be one factor. Maybe I will plan to do some cardio exercise every day to increase my endorphins and make my brain more happy. If I have seasonal affective disorder, maybe that is a physical, chemical or genetic factor that might make it more likely that I will be depressed during those gray days (I don't know much about seasonal affective disorder and why it occurs, but the idea is that there might be other factors besides just your astrology and sense of self-determination, there may also be societal, genetic, or environmental factors involved). If I have a lot of experience with what to expect in terms of my mental health and how I feel in gray winter days, maybe that experience is a factor that will help my prepare. I once spent a winter in Finland. On the shortest days there, the sun is only shining for four hours!!! In the fall before the days get too short everyone starts to take Omega-3 supplements because they think that helps during the long dark winter. And during those short days of winter, people light candles outside their homes on their porches and sidewalks, so that everywhere you go you see twinkling candle flames. Much fewer people live alone there. And most people have saunas in their homes or apartment buildings so that they can feel warmed and rejuvenated. If you live in an apartment building, you are assigned a day of the week to use the sauna. They are making a multitude of preparations to deal with the gray days. They are partially able to do this because they have generations of experience with the long dark winter. They know what to expect and they are resourced enough and organized enough to prepare.

In the same way, knowing astrology can help you prepare for the weather that is coming up so that you don't feel like a puppet. The weather can have a strong impact, but you can have any kind of experience in any kind of weather. You have total free will.
